Sula's place

The roof at Sulamita's house (the brazilian OC member, in whose house I stayed with) in the morning before we left for work.

Julia and me waiting for Emil and Chris to pick us up. We slept at Sula's together! She reintroduced me to dolce de leche. Holy crap, that stuff's stinkin' good..

No puedo recordar lo que hicimos este dia. Lo siento.

Chaos ensues.

We went to another school/village and ran a children's program. Here's Julia being Jesus as Chris and I (man and woman) fight. (And for the last time, we're not married!)

Adorable kids.

All kids have intense fascinations with digital cameras... or even cameras in general.

We taught the story of Zacchaeus the tax collector with pipe cleaners! They had so much fun!

Your zaqueo! Tan lindo!

The woman in the picture is the amazing lady who literally lives by faith with this school, trusting the Lord each month to provide for rent, school supplies, and salaries for the teachers. She reminded me of Dorcas.

After the children's program, we drove back to the city. Chris and I hopped in the back of the truck, where I sadly snagged my comfy jeans on a hook and ripped them a bit... So long comfy jeans.

Afterwards, we went back to the church in San Lucas, where we gave testimonies and presented our skits. They were pentecostal, so worship was a very different experience.
Chris giving his testimony and Sareth translating for him.

After that, we headed over to Zona 6, where we passed out sandwiches and spent time with the homeless. Although we couldn't take pictures (obviously for safety reasons), it was probably one of the most memorable ministry experiences in Guate. It was amazing to see the Spirit work in these homeless young people.

happy 4th everyone!

today was sorta chill! it was our 4th of july barbeque (even in the rain) and we pigged out on burgers! american food, que buena! unfortunately, we were too hungry for food to take any pictures of that...

pat (one of the missionaries) and julia.

julia taught us "shout to the Lord" in portuguese. It was awesome to sing "Shout to the Lord" in three languages. Next time, I'm SO taking the lyrics in Korean.

After learning some games we could use for ministry (you can't see too clearly, but there's watery mix of flour on kate's shirt from one of the games), we did some face painting!

all in one day.

Guate's full of trees everywhere! It was heavenly!

Sareth with two boys in Chimaltenango where we held a short children's program! Sareth is the coolest 17 year old I've met. Her dad runs a Christian international school and she helped us with all our children's ministries. This girl is so darn gifted! She is so good with kids!

Lots of dancing,

lots of drama (Chris and I represented man and woman in the drama... after that, EVERYONE thought we were married. It was crazy!),

lots of singing,

and just a lot of smiling!

Somehow, Chris and Emil (one of the OC missionaries) convinced these boys to take a picture.

Of course, Janet and I couldn't resist either!

Later in the day, we went to a church in San Lucas and cut their grass!

Janet with her rickety contraption... (haha, I couldn't think of a better word)

and Chris with MACHETES! Oh my goodness, using machetes to cut grass is SOOO freakin' hard!

Clowning around during the grass cutting.... Nacho libre!

One of the pastor's sons of the church in San Lucas.

We ended the day with learning how to use puppets for ministry! meet pablo miguel!

Buck wild in Antigua!

Antigua used to be the capital of what was once mexico/guatemala/honduras before the land was split. our missionaries set us out into two teams in a game of The Amazing Race, setting us loose in the city to do common, ordinary things (i.e. wash your clothes in the public tanque, ride a bus) to see how Guatemalans live day to day.

guatemala's surrounded by volcanoes. cool, i know. that one was spewing a bit the day before we arrived in antigua.

driving here sucks. you never know which signs/signals to follow and which ones to ignore.

one of the buses that we had to take to get to san antonio. bus experiences are crazy here: people jump onto moving buses, you're crammed until asphyxiation, they don't announce the stops so you better know where you have to get off, and sometimes, you'll have to hold a chicken during the ride. thankfully, i didn't have to hold a chicken. cluck cluck.

on my team for the game were chris and sareth (pronounced without the "h"). we were, of course, the winning team! haha. fight on...

antigua has these beautiful mini-balconies everywhere. while walking, i almost hit my head so many times! :(

some of the chicks i saw at the mercado for sale.

we learned how to make tortillas with masa. dang, it's not easy. chris actually made the prettiest, even though he was with two pretty artistic girls...

Delmi, the lady that taught us tortilla-making, was so excited to see me that she dressed me up in the traditional Guatemalan dress, a huipile. Haha, what a poser.

Julia and Janet with the tuk-tuk guy that drove them to Delmi's place.

The public tanque where we washed my sock (after finding a tienda to buy a bar of soap). That wet sock stayed in my backpack (unknowingly) for two days before I realized why my backpack smelled. Yuck!

Antigua's got fountains galore! So beautiful!

one of the beautiful government buildings in antigua.

We had to find this shoeshiner, Luis, and then learn how to shine shoes. Chris was a trooper. We spent 20 minutes shining shoes! Good Lord, they better be like brand-spankin' new!

Aha! After 20 minutes of Chris' hard work, we had a new shoe!

food for thought

after discovering an unexpected delay in our flight due to plane problems, we camped out for six hours- reading our assigned chapters of Foster's Celebration of Discipline, playing uno, spilling coffee (JANET!), shopping at duty free, and feeling like scum at miami's not-so-beautiful airport.

this was my cup from my toffee nut latte. made me think a bit about relationships. what do you think about it?

we're going to miami, baby!

another red-eye flight out from denver to miami! oh so tired in the early AM, but still cheerful (chris pretending to doze when in reality he was hyper like none-other. seriously, so early in the morning, i was about to pummel him!)

silly janet and me with our travel pillows and chris. oh, the poor, sole male. will God be merciful to him among a team of ALL girls? we shall see ;)

the view from the plane of florida, home of great beaches, amazing cuban & puerto rican food, and crazy crash diets. haha.

we decided to get dinner between our flight from miami to guatemala city. here's the unconscious consumption of $4.50/bottle iced tea at some jose cuervo dinner joint at the airport. eh, what a rip off. the beauties: janet and chris during dinner.
